Backup or cry...

Many of you have heard me say as soon as I walk in the door, "Are you backing up?"

Of course, I know right away when there is a pause, that the answer is probably, "No".

I can't stress enough the importance of having a good backup strategy to protect your precious photos, music, documents. Here is a good article by Christopher Phin about a simple backup strategy…

THE COMPLETE, EASY GUIDE TO BACKING UP YOUR MAC

Music Memos. Did someone read my wish list?

Apple announced today:

"
CUPERTINO, California — January 20, 2016 — Apple® today announced a new addition and a major update to its family of music-making apps for iOS that make it easy for people to tap into their musical potential and create incredible music no matter where they are. An all-new app called Music Memos lets musicians and songwriters quickly capture, organize and develop their musical ideas right on their iPhone®. And a major update to GarageBand® for iOS introduces multiple new features, including Live Loops, a fun way for anyone to make music like a DJ using only their iPhone or iPad®."

I have been using Voice Memos to record rehearsal, and ideas, but this is a high quality (so far) app. You can even press little icons for bass and drums to add a beat. It picks up your key and rhythm, and does a pretty decent job. Read more here:

New iPhone Pricing for AT&T

According to MacRumors, Starting on January 8, 2016, AT&T plans to introduce a "pricing simplification effort" that will see the end of device subsidies and two-year contracts. According to an internal training document shared by Engadget, new and existing AT&T customers will only be able to purchase a smartphone at full price or with an AT&T Next payment plan going forward. Since T Mobile moved away from 2 year contracts in 2013, there has been a general shift away from subsidized smart phone purchases by cell service providers. Verizon eliminated subsidized smart phone purchases for new customers, although at this time, existing customers can still purchase 2 year contracts, with subsidized phone.

El Capitan, 10.11.2 Go!

Hello dear Mac users, I now recommend those of you who have at least an Intel i5 processor, and 4GB of RAM or more to upgrade to El Capitan. Although the Intel Core 2 duo processors are compatible, unless you have more than 4 GB of RAM, I would I would say proceed cautiously. If you are buzzing along fine with Yosemite, OS X 10.10.5, then there's no real hurry to upgrade. But I've received many calls from people who need a newer operating system to be able to use some applications. And unfortunately, unless you have a bootable installation disk, you have to upgrade to the latest operating system through the app store. If you cannot upgrade because your system is too old, it's time to think about getting a new computer.
As with Yosemite, if you have an earlier copy of Microsoft office 2011, you can expect some problems and instability. I think it's a good idea to upgrade to Office 2016, either in individual perpetual license form (sold as a download), or the subscription to Office 365.
